How Does Liquid KI Oral Solution Work?

When administered in the recommended dose, Liquid KI Oral Solution is effective in reducing the risk of thyroid cancer in individuals at risk of inhaling or ingesting radioactive iodine. Liquid KI Oral Solution prevents the uptake of radioactive molecules by flooding the thyroid with non-radioactive iodine. Liquid KI Oral Solution only works to inhibit the thyroid from uptaking radioactive iodine—it is not a general radioprotective agent.1

The thyroid isn’t able to tell the difference between radioactive and stable iodine—in a nuclear emergency, it will absorb both.
By taking Liquid KI Oral Solution, the thyroid absorbs the stable iodine in the medicine.
The thyroid ‘‘fills up’’ with the stable iodine provided by Liquid KI.
Once the thyroid ‘‘fills up’’ with stable iodine, it cannot absorb anymore iodine—including radioactive iodine—for 24 hours.
